Well, a beauty here served by Dr Funky, ace !

Music Machine recorded quite a few excellent, imaginatively produced singles and album tracks that found them exploring the darker side of psychedelia with compelling intensity and imagination. Poor management and some incredibly bad decision-making led to their dissolution at the time, but Bonniwell is still something of a musical legend in the 21st century, and "Talk Talk" is regarded as a garage punk classic.

The Remains

Released in 1985 on the Fan Club division of the French New Rose record label, this double disc is packaged in bright yellow with a gatefold and superb liner notes/memories by J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf along with additional information by Remains bassist Vern Miller. With a whopping 28 tracks, it is seven cuts deeper than the 1991 Epic/Legacy re-release, at least five of those bonus tracks from the Capitol Records demos included here, material released on Sundazed in 1996 as Session With the Remains. The inner sleeve contains songwriter credits as well as the year, studio, and city where each tune was recorded as well as information on who produced each track. It is really exquisite, and sounds great to boot. The eternal debate from those who saw the band in their heyday opening for the Beatles in 1966 is "what if they had been recorded properly." William Briggs III said that he felt the Session With the Remains CD did capture that spirit. "Talking 'Bout You" certainly has a groove, while "Hang On Sloopy" is one of those fly-on-the-wall kind of moments, the band displaying much more of that garage aura than is revealed on the cut from the classic Nuggets compilation, "Don't Look Back," though that track helped perpetuate their legend. Peter Wolf's 1985 letter on the back cover giving the band credit for "power and control" of amplification, comparing them to the Who, is worth the price of admission. Wolf should know; Barry Tashian lived in the same apartment complex and was present when the former Peter Blankfield recorded the famous "bathroom tapes" of his own band, the Hallucinations. The essay by Vern Miller Jr. sheds even more light on the group history, noting that one of the songs here, Gram Parsons' "Luxury Liner," was recorded in Long Island during a brief 1976 reunion. For collectors of vinyl and hardcore fans of the band, of which there are many, this one is essential.

Ok so, here we have one of the rawest live bootlegs. Soft ears, keep away.

Now, a few words from the mighty web:

The MC 5 is worth hearing under just about any circumstances, and this set--given the song list, probably recorded sometime in 1969--is no exception. A motley collection of sound-board tapes (with lead singer Rob Tyner way down in the mix) and stuff that sounds like second-generation dupes from cassette decks in the audience, the music is nonetheless vintage Detroit madness, with the band's thrilling oleo of heavy metal out of the Who and the Yardbirds and '60s free-jazz heard to particularly good advantage on "Rocket Reducer No. 62" and the never-recorded-in-the-studio epic "Black to Comm." This is, of course, quintessentially low-fi stuff, although hardcore fans will want it if only to hear the 5 bulldoze their way through James Brown's "It's a Man's World." If you're new to the band, however, you should probably invest in the group's three "official" albums, including the live--and obviously much better engineered--KICK OUT THE JAMS.

Syndicate of Sound - Little Girl (1966)

The teen-band pride of San Jose, CA, the Syndicate of Sound scaled the heights of the rock & roll world for a very brief moment in the summer of 1966 with their Top Ten hit "Little Girl." With a catchy, jangly electric 12-string riff, a solid beat, a macho teen vocal, and a chord progression heavily influenced by "Hey Joe," the tune perfectly mirrored the sound of the times and was a can't-miss hit, a British sound played with American garage enthusiasm.

This quality BLOWS AWAY ALL that came before including the original, French label, boot. This is the definitive version. If that wasn't sick enough, we added on the speed corrected Sump'n Else TV Show tracks. These are the same recordings Sundazed botched by putting out at too fast a speed. These are slowed down to the correct pitch so Roky and crew don't sound like Alvin And The Chipmunks. You need this! It's an 80 minute slap o' sickness!

Standells gig poster 66

This was an announcement/press release from our production company "Greengrass Productions" and our manager Burt Jacobs "B-J Enterprises". Of course this was for "Hollywood Palace", the only gig in which the Standells wore tuxedos. It seemed that almost every performer wore formal wear on that show. Larry was against the custom made tuxedos, and thought they were a waste. But he was outvoted by the other members of the group!

Standells bio-correction, charts, hits...and more

Letter from Gordan McLendon, warning the recording industry not to play records with raunchy lyrics. "Try It" was his target. Even though Gordo had a shady past (which I cannot go into detail on, but we can say he was an acquaintance of Jack Ruby's), he managed to destroy what was penned by Billboard magazine to be the Standells next hit record.

"Big Boss Man" performed by the Standells on the TV show "Shivaree".

As you can tell, this is a hard driving rock song with the same chord structure and almost the exact harmonica solo as "Dirty Water". The 45 record was released by VJ Records in early 1965, months before the Standells met Ed Cobb and recorded "Dirty W ...ater". "Big Boss Man" provides further proof that, unlike what many falsely have claimed, Cobb did not seriously alter the direction of Standells music.

This misinformation can actually be traced to the liner notes of the early Rhino Records Standells re-releases such as "The Very Best of the Standells" (1981-1984). The Standells were not approached when these notes were created; only Ed Cobb's company AVI Records was contacted. As the story went, the Standells were a clean cut prep rock group before hooking up with Cobb, at which time he completely changed their image and sound. The story painted Cobb as more than just the Standells producer; it claimed he also booked the group and hardened their image - he was their 'Svengali'.

This was unadulterated bullshit.
`Bout history...

In truth, Cobb was only a producer; nothing more. As far as the assertion that Cobb hardened the group's clean cut image; this was fairytale, totally invented by AVI Records. This is evidenced by the early 1964 photo of the Standells with long hair (Photos, Standells 1963-1969). The photo was taken almost TWO Years before the Standells were introduced to Cobb. The fact is, the Standells were the first American rock group to grow long hair! They had done so after seeing photos of the Beatles in European magazines (before they became huge sensations in the U.S).

Unfortunately, in order to work at PJ's nightclub in 1965, the Standells were forced to trim their mop tops. At the time, PJ's would not tolorate long hair on groups. Their policy was also not to allow groups to play their own original songs - thus the criticism that the Standells were 'only a cover band' (So were the Beatles when they played clubs). In fact, after leaving PJ's in 1966, the Standells began to grow their hair back out (not at Ed Cobb's direction) and perform much of their original music on stage.

Most of the Standells bios on the internet today are derived not from the Standells, but from the dribble witten by Cobb's company. The Standells have repeatedly tried to correct the false information, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. So if you have the opportunity to read one of these faux bios (especially by Richie Unterberger), please feel free to voice your complaint!

Now you can read their whole story and enjoy their soundz on Erik Lindgren's CD - issued as part of a quartet on the region, with Pat Farrell & The Believers and two volumes of Eastern Pa. Rock making up the set. This CD features twenty-two tracks recorded especially by the band as a 'backing soundtrack' over which they would play or sync at a live performance in Reading on February 16th 1968.

Did you know that...

The band's frontman and primary songwriter was ?. Though the singer has never confirmed it, Library of Congress copyright registrations indicate that his birth name is Rudy Martinez. His eccentric behavior helped to briefly establish the group in the national consciousness. He claimed (and still claims) to be a Martian who lived with dinosaurs in a past life, and he never appears in public without sunglasses. He talks about traveling into the future and visiting other planets, asserting that he has done so. No other witnesses are known to have shared his questionable claims.

Peter Wright's Quill Records recorded some of America's best garage rock. The term is a misnomer in Wright's case because he used good studios but still managed to produce that raw, edgy sound associated with the style. The 25 tracks represent a good overview of Quill's output by a host of Midwest bands that deserved far better including the Exterminators, the Rooks, Chances R, the High Schoolers, the Delights, and the Skunks. Lovers of the style will treasure these refreshing mid-'60s sounds.

Wayne Kramer assembled this collection of 15 rare MC5 tracks, and while trying to cover the career of a band who helped give birth to punk rock AND made it onto Spiro Agnew's enemies list might seem like a near-impossible task in less than an hour, Babes in Arms does a pretty respectable job of capturing what the MC5 were all about in one convenient package. Most of the cuts on Babes in Arms are alternate versions of songs from the band's three studio albums, but while the most of the tracks appear in variant mixes or longer edits, the differences are minimal enough that they can pass for the originals in a pinch (one crucial exception: a great acoustic version of Fred "Sonic" Smith's "Shakin' Street"), making Babes in Arms a solid "Best of the MC5" collection. Even more importantly, the set also includes several excellent and hard to find early single sides, including the amusing garage-protest nugget "One of the Guys" and a primal, in-the-red rave-up on "Looking at You" that leaves the version on Back in the U.S.A. in the dust. The one previously unreleased song, "Gold," is an unfocused jam that doesn't really go anywhere, and the sound quality of the source materials isn't all that hot (especially on the CD version), but otherwise Babes in Arms is a howling, furious blast of what made the MC5 one of the finest (and most dangerous) American rock bands of the 1960s. Crank it up loud -- the guys would want it that way.

Even though the Standells were signed to Liberty Records, we were allowed a special record deal with MGM Records. The recording Zebra in the Kitchen, was the title song from the movie of the same name, starring Jay North. Sung by Larry, the song was produced by Perry Botkin Jr., who was quite a well-known composer / arranger for films in those days. The song was not written by us. It was not even written as a rock song and we had to completely re-arrange it.(Larrys Tamblyn notes)

Rudi's first band, which played junior high school sock hops, fire hall teen dances and parties in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. Their set consisted mostly of covers of cover versions, usually 3 chord top Forty hits like "Hang On Sloopy," "Gloria" and "Louie Louie," although they did play Rudi's first original song, "Penis Between Us," as well as a few more that would later be transformed into Fuzztones songs. In 2004, Misty Lane released "KING ARTHUR'S QUART - LIVE AT ALLEN JR. HIGH 1966," a 5 song 45. A full length CD is available through Sin Records.

The Friends

One of the many Scandinavian bands who took their inspiration from the Pretty Things in the mid-'60s. Little is known of this Swedish group, who released a few singles in 1965 and 1966. Their frenetic rock/R&B (sung entirely in English) was heavy on the snarling and somewhat accented vocals, accelerated tempos, and undisciplined guitar leads, and their recorded repertoire was mostly original.

This is the cover of the album 64-66(?), anyone can say something about the guys.(more info, pictures & more)

The Panthers were one of several Swedish groups in the mid-'60s who recorded fairly often without establishing much of a personality. Merseybeat, R&B, folk music, bad pop ballads, Ventures/Shadows-like instrumentals -- all were fair game. They did write much of their own material, and released at least half a dozen singles in the mid-'60s. But they're not worth paying attention to unless you've got a yen for documenting generic Continental rock of the era. (allmusic)

A pretty typical Dutch "beat" group of the 1960s, the Motions were pretty popular in their native land, releasing seven albums and over 27 singles in their eight-year career. Far from the best Dutch group, and far from the worst, most of their hits were fairly ordinary fare, ranging from dippy folkish ballads to tough mod rockers. Their best cut is the positively ferocious mod stomper "Everything That's Mine" (1966), with a searing feedback break worthy of the early Who. They're really most remembered for their lead guitarist and songwriter, Robby van Leeuwen, who left in 1967 to form Shocking Blue, and penned that group's international smash, "Venus."

Unknown Mystery 60's Group

Unknown Mystery 60's Group Volume I (Distortions) was released in 1997. The songs on the CD were found on a reel to reel tape at an outdoor flea market in Philadelphia. Nothing was known about the group except for the song titles, which were written on the tape box. The two photos on the CD were inside the tape box as well. Members of the "unknown group" were asked to contact the record label for their royalties and further contract negotiations.

In 2001, Octopus Records decided to track down the combo responsible for such gems as "Birdhouses", "Percival", and "Are You Mad At Me". Requests for info about the unknown group were placed in the classified sections of various Philadelphia Newspapers. A number of respondents (fans, neighbors, and relatives) provided clues that led Octopus to the band's drummer and archivist, currently living in Spain, who generously supplied Octopus with missing details, photographs, and tapes that made the Unknown Mystery 60's Group Volume II possible. Unfortunately, one concession to the members had to be granted before the release of Volume II: the identity of the band would have to remain anonymous. Why? The expatriate, serving as a spokesman for the others, replied: "It's more or less Bob Dylan's line: "I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now."

Thanks to the band archivist in Spain, another volume of brilliant songs by the "Unknown Group" was released by Birdhouse Records in July 2007. Mastered from the original tapes, this collection of 12 Love Songs showcases the band at the height of their songwriting and musical powers.

"The recordings, at a guess, seem to date from around '67 or '68. Consisting of 14 tracks (all originals), the group seems to have been a folk-rock type of group that were heavily influenced by the west coast sound. Tracks like "I Wanna Let You Know", "Percival", and "Are You Mad at Me" have a Buffalo Springfield edge with "I Wanna Let You Know" being a standout with a cool lead guitar and a simple but effective harp solo. "Is It Me or Is It You?" would actually be right at home on a later Beau Brummels LP while "Bumby" sounds like a Byrds "outtake" session -pretty cool stuff! My vote for the most rockin' track goes to "She's So Fine." With it's driving bass line and sneering guitar work, this Beatles influenced song would've been a good candidate for a 45. The group takes a minor turn into Psychedelia with "Salisbury Jane", which sounds like it could've been written by The British North American Act. The questions about the group will hopefully be answered in the upcoming years. So until then, if folk rock's your bag, dig the sounds of the "Unknown Mystery Group".

The Jaguars were a mainly instrumental group formed in the Saguenay area of Quebec in 1962. They quickly became the kings of the French Canadian rock 'n roll scene due to the creative and experimental style of their lead guitar player Arthur Cossette, who's real name is actually Jean Guy! He pierced his speakers to create his own distortion and fuzz sounds, which he blended into sweet sounds, prefering the melodic tones of the Shadows to the gnarly tuffness of Link Wray.Like most Quebecoise groups, Les Jaguars have remained a "local" group, becoming popular only in their region and prefering to play dances and hotels (in many of the smaller towns in Quebec, the only nightclubs were found in hotels) in the outlying areas of the province. At first, the Jaguars mixed their twang with horns and trumpets, due to the popularity of dance bands. But they soon gained a great following, and were able to continue playing in a pure rock 'n roll style!

Supersonic Recording Stars!

Because the Jaguars music was primarily meant for dancing, their Shadowesque sounds were a little raunchier than many of their French Canadian contemporaries. Songs like " Supersonic Twist", their first 45 mix a little bit of rhythm and blues raunch to create a dance floor grind. But their best and most frantic abrupt picking found it's way on the incredible "Jaguar Shake" ---- which featured a guitar attack as savage as their Cheetah print suits!

Their great selling singles promted their record label to record an LP packed with a few outstanding covers, and their trademark creative originals, which set them way above the rest of the pack! It featured tunes like "Guitar Jet" on which Arthur trades in his innocent staccato for the SEXIEST reverbed sound ever to come out of a guitar!!! Shortly after the LP was released in 1964. The fabulous LP lead to a busy year and the group continued to play thoughout the province. But in 1965, it began to become clear that vocal rock 'n roll was becoming increasingly more popular. Although the Jaguars continued to record for Tournesol, even releasing a second LP, their audience was thinning By 1966 it was clear that the band needed to either change their style, or disband. Sadly, in the Spring of 1966, the Jaguars called it quits.

Jean Guy continued to play rock 'n roll, but adopted the image of "Arthur" a crazy long haired, flowered hipster pants wearing garage band weirdo! He released one quirky solo single, and then joined Les Sinners upon the death of their lead guitar player! The Jaguars name has been resurrected several times by Arthur, and are currently playing in Quebec again. Their post 60's material is different (the Jaguars hits have been re-recorded several times) from their old sound.

A series of 6 brilliant LP's were released by a guy named Dave Shutt
out of Austin, TX back in 1982/83. They were limited edition of 200
per volume and were as close (if not clones) to the original 45's
(despite their condition) that you could get. Dave was an authority
on Texas Punk until he opted to sell his phenomenal 60's punk/psych
collection around 1986 . He also released a book on all the Texas
garage bands (1st pub 1978 / 2nd pub -revised 1984) entitled "Journey
Through Tyme". I feel fortunate enough to have known Dave and a kudos
goes out to him for all his efforts in keep the 60s punk scene moving
forward.(1st uploaders note)

The Attack - Final Daze (1967/69)

But this consists of unreleased 1967-1968 material by this minor British mod-psychedelic band, taken from guitarist John Du Cann's personal collection of acetates. It can't be considered the definitive Attack compilation, as it has nothing from the band's four 1967-1968 Decca singles (most of those tracks have shown up on various-artists compilations). It's fair, but no more than fair, British mod-psychedelia, catching the very beginning of the moment when U.K. psych started to head in a consciously heavy direction. Two of the cuts, "Freedom for You" and "Feel Like Flying," would have been the fifth Attack single had the band not been dropped by Decca, and "Freedom for You" is certainly one of the best things the Attack recorded, with a breathless, hard pop tempo and pretty good minor-key harmonies. For the most part it's pretty standard period British pop-psychedelic, with some of the more serious and louder numbers indicating that the group members might have been pretty intense Cream fans. Occasionally, as on "Magic in the Air," there's that fruity, childlike British whimsy characteristic of many pop-psych hybrids from that short but intense period of British pop. Half of this material showed up as bonus tracks on the CD reissue of the album by Five Day Week Straw People, which also featured John Du Cann. However, the remaining eight tracks (including alternate versions of a couple of numbers that had been released on the Five Day Week Straw People disc) are previously unreleased, although they're somewhat more marginal in worth.
