The Seeds: Flower Punk - 3 cd set (US)

The Seeds did write two garage rock classics with "Pushin' Too Hard" and "Can't Seem to Make You Mine," but that didn't mean their remaining records were as interesting as that pair of raw, vital rockers. Flower Punk acts otherwise, compiling all of the group's albums onto a triple-disc, book-bound collection. It's a beautifully packaged set and no song is overlooked, yet Flower Punk is only for serious garage rock and Seeds fetishists, since the band rarely ever hit the heights of "Pushin' Too Hard" and "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" again. Indeed, for many listeners, a simple greatest hits collection can sound samey, but over the course of three CDs, it becomes apparent that the Seeds and Sky Saxon were only capable of a few sounds, and you already have to be indoctrinated to find more than a handful of cuts on Flower Punk interesting.

Album Notes
While it certainly seems odd that the Seeds' box set shares its name with a corrosive satire by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention--especially considering that the Seeds were probably the only garage-psych band who DIDN'T take a whack at "Hey Joe," the song Zappa's parody is based on--FLOWER PUNK is an oddly apt title for a Seeds box set.
As much as Sky Saxon's lyrics espoused the transcendent powers of sex and drugs, the rest of the band, especially organist Daryl Hooper, played like they'd kick your ass just for looking at them funny. This three disc set covers all of their original albums, THE SEEDS, A WEB OF SOUND, FUTURE, RAW AND ALIVE and the peculiar A SPOONFUL OF SEEDY BLUES, released by the same personnel under the temporary moniker The Sky Saxon Blues Band. There's a lot more great music here than you might expect.

Finally a very good idea Pablo to post the Seeds just after the Pretty Things.A lot of similarities between the 2 bands ;two great lead singers,great wild songs and high energy.Only a little difference ,the US group recorded a real good live album.

Good point Jean, true, the live that you mention,can be checked here (I posted at dias de garage one year ago)
http://garagerocks.blogspot.com/2008/01/seeds-raw-alive-seeds-in-concert-1967.html

and the Pretties never record a trully live album with good sound quality (in comparisson with the Seeds).

I have this CD set. Great one.
By the way, Raw & Alive is NOT a real "live" album, it has been recorded "live in studio" with acclaims overdubed.
And I think that the Seeds have been able to create more than two good songs. They made some great garage songs and a part of their psychedelic recordings is great too. But it's a matter of taste, eh ?

Michael Jackson-Sky Saxon Parallels

Much like the much-ballyhooed Lincoln-Kennedy parallels, the deaths of Michael Jackson and Sky Saxon call to mind several common aspects of both of their lives. Coincidences - or are they?

First of all, Jackson rhymes with Saxon.

Sky Saxon played for the kids;
Michael Jackson played with the kids.

Michael Jackson originally performed with the Jackson 5;
The Seeds were originally a quintet.

Michael Jackson was married to Lisa Marie Presley;
Sky Saxon insisted on singing Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender" at Cavestomp '98.

Michael was raised by his mother as a Jehovah's Witness;
Sky, who lived for a time with his mother, joined the Yahowa sect.

Sky Saxon hit big with "Pushin' Too Hard";
Michael Jackson found it too hard to push it in.

Seeds records were often found in the bargain bin;
Michael Jackson often had little boys' pants half off.

Gracias, Pablo. You have a great blog! I came up with some more.

(slight amendment to #2)
Sky Saxon played well for the kids on the Sunset Strip;
Michael Jackson played with the kids well past sunset.

Sky Saxon claimed to communicate telepathically with dogs;
Michael Jackson sang "Ben," a movie theme about a boy who could telepathically communicate with rats.

Sky Saxon burned out after his commercial success;
Michael Jackson burned himself while filming a Pepsi commercial.

Sky Saxon sang "Night Time Girl," which he had a big hand in writing
You knew it was night time at Michael Jackson's house when the big hand touched the little hand.

Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch is eight square miles;
Sky Saxon got eight miles high and never landed.

In his later years, Sky came to depend upon the kindness of strangers.
In his later years, Michael went off the deep end and got kinda stranger.

Sky Saxon liked to blow his mind on Angel Dust.
Michael Jackson liked to blow Bubbles.

A good garage fan knows the Seeds' catalog;
Michael Jackson picked his nose out of a catalog.

slds,

Tom
