Sky Saxon R.I.P

June 25, 2009

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Sky Saxon (Richard Marsh), lead singer and founder of the 1960s band the "Seeds," who had a Top 40 hit in 1967 with "Pushin' Too Hard," has died after a brief illness.

Publicist Jen Marchand says Saxon died Thursday but did not have other details. He was in his 60s.

The Seeds sprang up in California, and their garage-band sound with Saxon's distinctive vocals became a favorite of the flower power generation.

Other Seeds singles included "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" and "Mr. Farmer."

Saxon (born Richard Marsh) had recently moved to Austin, where he played with his new band, Shapes Have Fangs.

He had been planning to perform this summer with the California '66 Revue, a tour featuring a lineup of California bands from the 1960s.

Que notícia triste...
Estou surpreso!

TIME - Once upon a time,I stood with 'Pushing Too Hard'fresh from the record rack in my hand. I walked home and listened, little knowing that a moment can change one's life. Today, in this moment, Sky has gone, as is the way of 'All Things Must Pass', however, The world is an emptier place.
Love and silence (the most potent of sounds) to Sky, who is now beyond all earthly things.

Michael Jackson-Sky Saxon Parallels

Much like the much-ballyhooed Lincoln-Kennedy parallels, the deaths of Michael Jackson and Sky Saxon call to mind several common aspects of both of their lives. Coincidences - or are they?

First of all, Jackson rhymes with Saxon.

Sky Saxon played for the kids;
Michael Jackson played with the kids.

Michael Jackson originally performed with the Jackson 5;
The Seeds were originally a quintet.

Michael Jackson was married to Lisa Marie Presley;
Sky Saxon insisted on singing Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender" at Cavestomp '98.

Michael was raised by his mother as a Jehovah's Witness;
Sky, who lived for a time with his mother, joined the Yahowa sect.

Sky Saxon hit big with "Pushin' Too Hard";
Michael Jackson found it too hard to push it in.

Seeds records were often found in the bargain bin;
Michael Jackson often had little boys' pants half off.

so few people mentioned his death, almost everybody focused on M.J.'s and that's sad.

Both of them though, R.I.P.

p.s.: the comparison made a couple of comments ahead is highly interesting! thanks!

Thanks for the post, Pablo - unfortunately the link is dead. But I'm gratified to find that there are a few who are familiar with the work. I've got the LP buried amongst boxes somewhere. I'll have to dig it out someday. It's probably next to "Shiva's Headband" and other esoterics....
Peace.
